Types of Diabetes According to Ayurveda and The Most Common Symptoms

Diabetes is a common disease that is well known to Ayurveda. Ancient Ayurvedic Science has not only identified the condition but also recognized the different types of diabetes that can afflict people. Thus, Ayurveda treats Diabetes in a holistic way that takes into account the type of diabetes that the patient has and the stage of disease.

Types of Diabetes according to Ayurveda:

According to Ayurveda, there are twenty types of Prameha – four types occur because of vata, six occur because of pitta and ten occur because of kapha. Madhumeha is a subtype of Prameha and is co related with diabetes.

Types of Diabetes according to Modern:

Type 1 diabetes, commonly known as juvenile diabetes since it is mostly diagnosed in children, is an autoimmune condition in which the body destroys its own insulin -producing cells and ceases to be able to naturally regulate blood sugar levels. Without the capacity to handle blood sugar, the body is starved for nutrients and is unable to convert sugar into energy in the cells.

Type 2 diabetes is a type of insulin-resistant condition where even though the body may produce insulin, it is impaired in its ability to absorb it into the cells where it can do its work of converting sugars into energy. Type 2 diabetes is commonly caused by poor diet, and low physical activity. It is considered to a major part of the obesity epidemic.

The most common Symptoms of Diabetes:

Extreme thirst: People with diabetes feel extreme and insatiable thirst leading to over hydration and excess water retention.

Excessive hunger: Patients of diabetes also feel very hungry at times when their blood sugar drops and can feel drowsy if they do not eat immediately.

Dry mouth: Many patients frequently feel dry mouth or “cotton mouth,” which can be uncomfortable, irritating and prevent proper speech.

Upset stomach: Diabetes can lead to problems with digestion and a frequently upset stomach with pain and spasms.

Urge to vomit: When the body cannot digest food, it seeks to expel it with vomiting, disrupting the lifestyle of patients.

Sudden weight loss: People suffering from diabetes can end up shedding weight at an alarming rate, leaving the body frail and weak.

Constant fatigue: One of the biggest problems for diabetics is a loss of energy and chronic fatigue, which can be a big impediment.

Blurry vision: A loss or deterioration of vision is a common problem faced by many patients with severe diabetes.

Unusually frequent urination: The most characteristic symptom of diabetes, frequent urination can be a serious and debilitating problem.

Slow-healing wounds: People who have diabetes tend to heal slowly, leading to infection and other complications.

Besides these common symptoms, people who have diabetes may also have other associated health issues, such as those relating to the heart or kidney. This happens because of excess blood sugar. There are many cases of people suffering a mild heart attack and not knowing about it because of high diabetes levels. Therefore, it is very important to keep blood sugar levels under control.

The Ayurvedic Perspective on this common condition:

Diabetes is a disease that is well known to Ayurvedic Science. There is a long list of preventive and curative remedies prescribed by Ayurveda for diabetes whose effect can be nothing short of miraculous, especially when availed of in tandem.

In Ayurveda, diabetes is known as Madhumeha. Diabetes mellitus is referred to as Vata Prameha and is said to occur because of an imbalance in the Vata Dosha. Diabetes insipidus is referred to as Kapha Prameha. This occurs because of an imbalance in the Kapha Dosha. To manage and reverse diabetes, Ayurveda uses a combination of nutrients, lifestyle changes and therapies.

Ayurveda’s Stage-centric approach:

In Ayurveda, the treatment for diabetes is determined by the stage of diagnosis.

  1. Dietary restrictions and recommendations
  2. Nutritional recommendations, food restrictions, and Yoga exercises
  3. Shodhana (Ayurvedic detoxification, such as Panchakarma), dietary recommendations, Yoga exercises, and Ayurvedic herbal preparations.
